KAT Communications of Bismarck hosted members of the North Dakota Center for Persons with Disabilities, the Centers for Disease Control’s Division of Human Development and Disability and the National Limb Loss Information Center from the Amputation Coalition of America, along with area American Indian health professionals as they discussed outreach strategies to increase prevention of amputations in Indian Country. Among American Indians, 75%-80% of amputations due to complications of diabetes are preventable. The group discussions led to a series of collaborative strategies and proposals that will increase awareness and preventive education in an effort to cause a measurable decrease in these statistics.
