Just what can you do with a man on a horse? What is the message you want to convey, and what look would best accomplish it? These three photos, shot for an agribusiness piece, are an example of the variety of moods and looks you can achieve with one subject.

Shooting against the light source has to be an exact science. Correct angle and settings will produce dramatic photographs.

This was shot with a Canon 200mm F2.8 L Series lens. Quality of the lens directly affects the quality of the photo.

Being slightly off angle in this situation would produce a lens flare which would detract from the image.
Having a variety of lenses with different focal lengths will extend the realm of possible photographic options.

In this shot a super wide angle was used to create the feeling of openness in the cowboy's world.

A sky so blue? Shutter speed and aperture were adjusted for maximum saturation and depth of field.
You may be surprised at the amount of setup used to create this shot.

First, the angle was critical. Placement of the subject with the house and farm buildings in the background helps tell the story of who he is.

Then, a gold reflector was used to "warm" the subject's color.

Finally, a large external strobe was used to light the area between the sun backlight and the gold reflector.

This photo is a good example of how to control the lighting, not let it control you.
